Ginger Snap Crafts: Unfinished Blankets

Unfinished Blankets

From July 15-17, 2016, FamilySearch International will sponsor their third annual “Worldwide Indexing Event”, join 72,000 people from around the world together online during a 72-hour event to save the world’s records by making them searchable to the public. I am excited to be partnering with them to help spread the word!

This is my Grandmother, Mary Denton Ault.

I lost my Grandmother way too early in August of 2004 to cancer. I can’t believe it’s been almost 12 years ago. I miss her everyday. This is a picture of my grandparents house! I think I spent more nights here than my own house! ha! She loved holidays & especially Christmas. Her house would be decorated from top to bottom each year complete with a Christmas village. We loved spending time with her, and she loved her grandchildren. My grandparents had 5 boys so when I was born she was over the moon. Finally, a little girl to dress up & buy dolls for. I was a little bit spoiled! ha! :)

I originally posted this on our family blog a few years ago. The original post title was Unfinished Blankets & Snuggle Weather.

“My brothers and sisters may we resolve from this day forward to fill our hearts with love.
May we live so that when that final summons is heard, we may have no serious regrets,
no unfinished business, but will be able to say with the Apostle Paul,
'I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith.'"

President Thomas S. Monson

Just before my Grandmother Ault passed away she took me into her back bedroom, and opened up a suitcase full of quilts, some finished and some unfinished. She reached in & gave me a finished quilt that she had started when I was a baby. She had just finished it just for me. I treasure my quilt. It reminds me of my Grandmother. She also gave me the material of three unfinished quilts one each of my oldest children Zach, Cailey & Rylan. (My younger two, Cara & Cole weren't part of our family just yet). She had chosen the material just for them, but she knew her time was short & she wouldn't be able to get them finished. Most of you know I am not the seamstress. I definitely did not inherit my Grandmother's sewing abilities, but I was determined to get the quilts finished for my Grandmother to see.

I got the kiddos to help me with them. We sewed the good sides together leaving a little gap open around the edge, then flipped them around, put batting inside, sewed up the hole and then tied each quilt with white yarn. Not as fancy as my Grandmother would of done, but we did the best we could.  Zach has a fire truck blanket, Cailey has a pink rosebud blanket (Grandmother said because she had rosebud lips when she was a baby!) and Rylan has a Little Boy Blue blanket.

Before Grandmother Ault passed away I took a picture of the kiddos with their blankets & put it in a frame for her to keep. I know it made her happy seeing the kids with their "Grandmother Ault" blankets all finished. As the years have passed the blankets have been folded up and put away. Until Miss Cara came along. :) Since she was a little baby she has loved Cailey's Grandmother Ault blanket. It has now been named by Cara as “my flower blanket”. Each night when I tuck Cara in she says, "I want my flower blanket touching my skin." So I always put that one on first, then her warm blanket on top. :) On cold days she loves to snuggle up on the couch with her flower blanket & watch TV.

When my Grandmother Ault left this earth, she might have left a few unfinished blankets, but with the things that really counted she left nothing unfinished. She was an amazing women who loved the Gospel & her family. She was strong, faithful and the best grandmother in the world. She knew how to do anything. She was always a phone call or a visit away. I knew she loved me, and I am so blessed to be her granddaughter. I miss her everyday, but I know one day I will see her again. I know now that when she looks down from heaven she can see her little great granddaughter who she never got to meet in this life all snuggled up & warm in her Grandmother Ault flower blanket. I'm sure it warms her heart. Families really are everything! That is why family history is so important. As we learn more about those that have gone before us, we learn more about ourselves. I love sharing my Grandmother Ault stories with my kiddos. Even my younger two feel like they know her a little bit, too. This coming week we have the chance to help others & ourselves learn more about our family histories.

From July 15-17, FamilySearch International will sponsor their third annual “Worldwide Indexing Event”, bringing 72,000 people from around the globe together online during a 72-hour event to save the world’s records by making them searchable to the public.

During the 72-hour indexing period, volunteers participate by downloading the FamilySearch software and completing as many names as they would like.  Anyone with a computer and internet connection can join.

Volunteers have made over one billion historic records searchable online since FamilySearch introduced online indexing in 2008. The demand for indexed records continues to grow as millions of historical records worldwide are added every year.

To join 72,000 teammates in saving the World’s records, visit https://familysearch.org/worldsrecords.

FamilySearch International is the largest genealogy organization in the world. It is a nonprofit, volunteer-driven organization sponsored by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. FamilySearch and its predecessors have been actively gathering, preserving, and sharing genealogical records worldwide for over 100 years. Patrons may access FamilySearch services and resources free online at FamilySearch.org or through over 4,921 family history centers in 129 countries.

Please think about volunteering! We are throwing an indexing party! I share more later on this week. Grab a couple of friends & do the same. Let me know if you have any questions! You can find this event on facebook, too. Go {HERE}. Do you have any favorite family history stories? Share in the comments below. I’d love to hear them!
