Hello! How was your weekend? Ours was fantastic! We worked together as a family on a few projects, had some amazing weather & got to spend some quality time together. That’s always nice. ;) A few weekends ago my hubby & I worked on this easy DIY shutter headboard for our master bedroom. We used shutter memo boards from We R Memory Keepers. I kind of LOVE it! So I’m excited to share the EASY tutorial with you today so you can make one too. So keep reading! :)
I love these shutter memo boards from We R Memory Keepers. They are awesome. I have two red ones hanging in my kitchen. I got to looking at those, did a few measurements & realized that 4 of them put together would be the perfect size for a headboard on our queen size bed in our master bedroom. Awesome! So here is how we did it! :)
You’ll need a few supplies to get started:
(4) We R Memory Keepers shutter memo boards ~ I used the heavy distressed grey. (They also have red, mint, cream & grey.)
wood filler
sand paper
spray paint in a matching color ~ I used Krylon ColorMaster Primer in Ultra Flat gray.
wood stain ~ I used MinWax Golden Oak.
nail gun & finishing nails
stud finder
leveler
First, I removed the knobs on the bottom of my shutters. Filled the holes left behind with wood filler. Let dry overnight. Then the next day I sanded over the wood filler until smooth. Then I applied one coat of spray paint over the entire shutter. Let dry. Then I gently sanded back over the distressed areas. Then I added some wood stain with a rag. Then let I let it dry completely. Now we are ready to hang these up! :)
Using a stud finder we marked lightly on the wall where the studs were so we could have a general idea of where we should nail the shutters up at. (TIP: Remove the hangers that come screwed onto the back of shutters before putting them up. You won’t need them for this project.) Then using a nail gun & some finishing nails we simply nailed the shutters to the wall. We used a couple of nails along the top & a few along the bottom, too. Use a level to make sure your shutters stay nice & straight. This is a two person job. ;)
Since these shutters are nice & very distressed already you couldn’t even tell where the nails have gone into the shutters. Even if you look really, really close! ;) Yay! I was a little worried about that before we go started! ha! ;)
You might of noticed that we hung our shutters “upside” down. My hubby thought it looked better that way. The shutters look like they are closed instead of opened. I was good either way. I’m not picky. ;)
I love how it turned out! Seriously that was a 20 minute project not counting the painting part. ;) You can’t beat that at all! :)
