Ginger Snap Crafts: Stenciled Glass Fall Subway Art {tutorial}

Stenciled Glass Fall Subway Art {tutorial}

This post is brought to you by DecoArt.

Fall is in the air! OK…well maybe not! ha! It’s still pretty hot around here! ;) Buuuut it will be here before you know it! So it’s the perfect time to start working on all of those fall projects, right? Well this year at our house I’m changing up the fall color scheme just a bit. I’m thinking of putting a little turquoise in there instead of the traditional orange, browns & reds. Lately I’ve been busy working on getting our fall mantel ready. Today I’d love to share the very first project I’ve made for our mantel. I’m so loving this Stenciled Glass Fall Subway Art that I made using some Americana Multi-Purpose Satin Paint & Americana Mixed Media Stencil.

For this project I used the Americana Multi-Surface Paint in Coastal Waters. I have a thing for turquoise lately! ha! ;)

For this project first I took my frame apart. Then I took my piece of glass & cleaned it really well with some rubbing alcohol. I put my glass down on the table. Then I taped down my stencil on top with some painter’s tape just to keep in place, and to prevent it from sliding around on me.

Then I used my stencil brush to lightly tape on the paint. I’m not a stenciling expert. ha! So I it actually took me 3 attempts to get the look I wanted! Seepage! :( This paint comes right off under running water. So it was really no big deal. Practice makes perfect! Right? ;) The secret is a little paint & barely any pressure with your stencil brush. Just lightly tap the paint on.

TIP:
For a stronger bond let your paint cure for 4 days & then put your glass in an non-preheated oven at 325 degrees & bake for 30 minutes. Then let it cool in the oven with the oven door open. You could also do this with ceramics! This makes your item dishwasher safe! Just think about the possibilities! :)

stenciling on glass

After you’ve finished painting, take the tape off & remove your stencil. Let the paint dry & then move your stencil down & finish the rest until you have stripes all the way down your glass.

After my paint had dried I used a glue gun (a little dab in each corner) to attach my stenciled glass to my frame. TIP: Have the side you painted on face the back of your frame. That will be very helpful in the next step. ;)

Then I applied some fun fall subway art vinyl lettering onto the front of my frame (on the unpainted side of the glass). I got this subway art from here & used my digital craft cutter to cut it out. I added a few fall words that fit our family & to make the design fit my entire frame. :)

All done! :)

Now I have my first fall project done! Annnnd yes, my mantel is looking a little bare right now! haha! I have a few more projects in the works, & I will show you my completed mantel very soon! :) So are you working on fall projects yet? Have you started on your fall decorating? Is it still a little too early? I’d love to hear your thoughts! :)
