Chalky Finish Bench Makeover #chalkyfinish

This post is brought to you by DecoArt. #chalkyfinish #decoartprojects

Hello! Good morning! I don’t know if you are like me, but I have a gazillion things on my “I want to get this done” list. Annnnd sometimes it takes me quite a while to get things check off that list. ha! Buuuut it feels so good when I do! ;) I have wanted to makeover the storage bench in our front entry way for forever. It has gotten pretty beat up & bang up over the years. I finally took a day & got it done with some help from the fabulous Americana Decor® Chalky Finish Paint line & supplies. So let me show you how I did it. Let’s get started!

bench makeover

Any good makeover has to start with the before pictures, right? ;)

before pictures

I love having storage benches near entryways. They are so awesome at catching everyone’s shoes & keeping it neat & tidy. Buuuuut with all that shoe throwing & lid opening & closing these benches can take a beating. As you can see our bench had seen better days! It needed some help. :)

For this bench makeover I used:

Americana Decor Chalky Finish Paint

Americana Decor® Chalky Finish Paint can be found at Home Depot & just about any major craft store like Hobby Lobby & Michaels. When I’m painting furniture I love using smooth foam rollers. They really help you get that nice smooth finish.

Another tip is to set your furniture up on blocks of wood. This makes it so much easier to paint. It took about two coats of paint to get a nice, smooth even coverage. I love the soft, smooth look of chalky finish paint.

painting a bench

I discovered that the bottom panel of my bench could pop right out. So after I had painted it with the nice gray color I decided to stencil the bottom panel of my bench with the Americana Decor® Vintage Chalky Finish Stencil ~ Distressed Harlequin. I thought it would add a fun surprise when you opened the lid.

A tip for stenciling: Let your stencil overlap the edges just a bit.

Then using a stencil brush lightly apply your paint. I used the color lace.

how to stencil

I love how this stencil has that distressed look so my stenciling job could be a bit messy! ha! After it dried I sanded it just a little bit with some fine sandpaper to give it even more of a distressed look.

stenciled bottom

After everything was nice & dry I gave it two coats of Americana Decor® Clear Crème Wax using a lint free rag. I love the hidden stencil in the bottom. :)
