Good morning! Christmas is coming up real quick! Annnnnd some of the first people I think about getting gifts for are all the teachers in my kiddos’ lives. Teachers are amazing! :) So, today I’d love to share this Teacher Tumblers gift idea with you along with a how to cut vinyl tutorial annnnnnnd a fun giveaway from Cricut! I promise, you’ll want to read to the end of THIS post. Eek!
To make these cute tumblers I needed two things. First, my amazing *mint* Cricut Explore Air 2 and vinyl!
Let’s talk about vinyl for a minute. :) Vinyl is my absolutely favorite thing to craft with. I just seriously love it! I also love that Cricut® carries so many different types of vinyl that can be used for so many different things. Let me give you a quick run down. ;)
Cricut® Vinyl lets you customize without a permanent commitment! You can easily create stencils, labels, wall décor, signs & more. I use this type of vinyl the most!
• You can find it in tons of fun colors.
• Ideal for making easily removable decals, labels, and other DIY projects
• Can be used with all Cricut® electronic cutting machines
Chalkboard vinyl makes it easy to personalize your home with customized quotes, message boards, removable labels, chore charts, and calendars or you could even customize your own school supplies. Chalkboard vinyl can be used with all Cricut machines to make fun chalkboard spaces in your home. Chalkboard is so, so popular, too!
Cricut® Premium Outdoor Glossy Vinyl
You will love this outdoor vinyl for its versatility and ease—and it has extra strength to weather the storm! This vinyl can be used on your front door, on your mailbox or even as a fun decal for the back of your car window. Again, this vinyl can be used with all Cricut machines as well.
Turn any surface into a dry erase board with dry erase vinyl. Cut it into any shape with any Cricut machine. Then apply it to a smooth surface, & then write or draw on it with dry erase markers. You can then wipe off the writing with a dry eraser or paper towel. This vinyl has a long-lasting cling on most smooth surfaces, including walls, glass, ceramic, metal & more. It removes cleanly, leaving no residue. Ideal for applying to a wall for a family message board, getting organized with labels or creating an office calendar.
You can also find fun specialty vinyl like holographic vinyl or glitter vinyl. Annnnnd don’t forget Cricut® Vinyl Transfer Tape. Alright, now let me show you how to cut vinyl! Basically you will cut all vinyl the same way. You might need to adjust your blade settings, but other than that it’s all the same. It’s super easy. Let’s get started! :)
For this project you will need:
these images from Design Space
black, red, green & brown vinyl (FYI: I just used standard Cricut vinyl for this project.)
light grip cutting mat
transfer tape
tumblers (I found these at Walmart.)
First, you’ll open up your design. You can do that here. TIP: I measured my cup & knew I had about a 3 in x 4 spot to work with. So I made a rectangle that exact shape in Design Space.
Then I sized these cute teacher quotes to fit just right! :)
I deleted the rectangle, & now it’s time to cut!
I sent it all to my Cricut Explore Air 2 to do the hard stuff! Cutting! :)
Vinyl comes in a solid sheet with a backing paper. Your machine actually cuts the vinyl, not the backing paper. It’s not a printer, it’s a cutter. ;)
See all of the cut lines…..
The next step is called weeding. Basically you are removing all the excess vinyl from around your design.
Once you take most of the vinyl off, you’ll noticed that there are a few piece left. Especially in the e’s and a’s and o’s.
Use a weeding tool to remove all of those little bitty pieces.
Then you’ll put a piece of transfer on top of your vinyl.
Now, we are ready to apply the vinyl. This is my favorite part! :)
Remove the backing paper, leaving the vinyl on the transfer tape. When you are working with a curved surface work on the middle & then out. Rub the middle of your decal onto your surface, and then gently rub the vinyl down toward both edges.
Then carefully remove the transfer tape, leaving the vinyl behind.
The apple is just layered red, green, brown & black vinyl.
Then I filled the tumblers with hot chocolate packets & chocolates. Yum!
Isn’t that the sweetest teacher gift? :)
FYI: I washed these in my dishwasher, but hand washing might be the best bet!
